7 Reasons We Need More Female MENTALISTS

When was the last time you saw a female Mentalist perform? Why is it that women in Mentalism are such a well-kept secret?

Reasons include, historical norms, stereotypes, societal expectations and unequal opportunities. Lack of role models is also a big reason. Lack of access to resources comes into play too. Females often experience a pressure to conform to traditional career paths. And, let’s admit it, the male competition can be fierce.

That’s a lot for anyone to overcome. When we perform our mentalism show we find audiences to be ecstatic at the idea of being entertained by a female duo because having women in Mentalism is a game-changer. But we need more!

Here are just a few of reasons we need more women in Mentalism:

Breaking Gender Stereotypes

Historically, Mentalism and magic have been male-dominated fields. The entertainment industry, like many other sectors, has had its fair share of gender bias. However, as societal norms are rapidly evolving toward the realization that talent and skill have no gender. By showcasing women mentalists, these stereotypes will dissolve.

Expanding Representation

It is essential for audiences to see themselves reflected in the performers they admire. Women mentalists provide a new dimension of diversity, making it easier for female audience members to connect with and be inspired by the performers.

A Unique Perspective

Women bring their own unique perspective to Mentalism. They often approach the art with different subtleties, nuances, and storytelling techniques. This diversity in style and approach enhances the overall experience of Mentalism, offering a truly fresh and captivating take on the traditional art form. For most male Mentalists the subtext is, “Look how amazing I am and all I can do!” For the larger majority of female Mentalists, the subtext is, “Look at what’s possible. Look at what we all might be able to do!”

Inspiration for Aspiring Artists

When women succeed in traditionally male-dominated fields like Mentalism, they serve as role models for the next generation of female performers. Their success encourages young women to pursue their passion for magic. It sends a powerful message that any woman can achieve her dreams. We have been mentoring young mentalists for over 20 years. Age ranges from 6 years old, to 92 years old.

Broadening the Range of Material

Female mentalists often develop unique material that adds depth and variety to the performances. Their perspective can lead to innovative and thought-provoking routines that set them apart from their male counterparts. Narrative from our show includes: “If our cell phones are ‘telepathic’, why can’t we be? One is silicon-based wiring and the other is carbon-based wiring, but it’s still just wiring that is firing! Let’s do an experiment…” Or, “Is it too farfetched to think that you can gather information using magnetism and vibrational sound? No. This is how a Bat or a Whale gathers information.

This diversity in content pulls the art form out of the drawing rooms of the Victorian era and into modern day scientific sensibility.

Encouraging Inclusivity

The inclusion of women mentalists in the entertainment industry contributes to a more inclusive and diverse community. It promotes a sense of belonging and acceptance for women in the field. This inclusivity fosters a healthier and more vibrant industry. In one of our programs, we talk about “The science of conscious awareness, heightened focus, mindfulness and optimizing brain function.”

Promoting Gender Equality

By actively supporting and promoting women in Mentalism, the industry sends a clear message that all genders should have equal opportunities and recognition.

We were just asked to perform a set of Mentalism to kickoff the All Raise VC Summit 23, in San Francisco. It was a 2-day conference for women and non-binary venture capitalists from around the world. Organizers saw the profound power and necessity of having female representation in the realm of powering potential. This is the narrative they were most glad to see as a part of the script: “What has drawn us together for this amazing opportunity for expansion, is mysterious power of the human mind. You are in the business of intellectual currency AND heart coherence.”

The entertainment industry is shape-shifting quickly, and it is vital that Mentalism, as a unique and captivating art form, reflects this evolution. Women mentalists bring a fresh perspective, unique skills, and a powerful message of empowerment to the industry. Our inclusion not only benefits the industry itself but also inspires the next generation of female performers. By recognizing the importance of women mentalists and providing them with the platform they deserve, we can create a more diverse, inclusive, and innovative world of entertainment for everyone to enjoy.
